As the saying goes, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” Yet, how often do we decide to change something that, to all extent and purposes, was perfectly fine in the first place?

What led me to ponder this? My hair! I had what every girl dreams of, the perfect hairstyle. It was easy to maintain, looked good and, more important, I felt attractive. Perfect strangers would come up to me and ask me where I got my hair done. My hair was good and thus–bear with me men, you will never understand this—life was good.

So what did I do? I got it all cut off. And though weeks have passed since this fatal decision, every time I look in a mirror I think, I hate my hair!

Ah well, luckly hair grows back… so perhaps I’m being a little over dramatic.

The point is, how many times do we make similar choices that aren’t so easily reversible? Buying a new car because it’s been two years and it’s time for a new car. Leaving a job we love because society tells us we really should be trying to make more money and be more important. Mortgaging ourselves to a bigger home, even though the one we live in is perfectly fine. Or how about this fatal move; screwing up a perfectly good marriage because we miss the thrill of a new romance.

I wonder how many people who have made this last, frankly, fatal decision, wake up every morning, look at their new partner and think, I hate my life!

Change is good…but not always. (ie “If It Ain’t Broke, Don’t Fix It!”)
